Martha Duncan Everett (95) of Kingwood, TX, was born in Raleigh, NC, to her late parents John Nelson Duncan and Dorothy Allen Duncan. She earned a B.A. in Spanish at Duke University, married William Weaver Lynn of Greenville, AL, and moved to Valparaiso, FL, in 1949.
Martha started her career as an elementary school teacher, and after a break to have two daughters, she worked as a civilian employee at Eglin AFB, beginning as an engineering aide in the Math Services Lab and working her way up to computer programmer and data analyst. At home, she taught herself to cook, sew, knit, crochet, and embroider.
After her first marriage ended in divorce, she married Clyde Raymond Everett in 1972. They made a formidable pair at the bridge table, and Ray taught her well in growing vegetables and fruit. She once said that if other people can do an activity, she could learn to do it too; and she demonstrated her ability to conquer new things throughout her long life. Martha and Ray traveled to Switzerland, Australia, and New Zealand and throughout the U.S., taking daughters and spouses with them on tours of the Canadian Rockies and Western U.S.
Martha contributed to local organizations as president of the Valparaiso Elementary PTA, member of the board of directors of Okaloosa Walton Junior College, member of the board of directors of the Eglin Federal Credit Union, and treasurer of the local Delta Delta Delta alumnae chapter. She was a faithful member of the non-denominational Community Church in Valparaiso and later the First Presbyterian Church in Niceville, FL.
Martha cherished her family and strived to hold the various branches close. She was predeceased by her parents, husband Ray Everett, and brother John N. Duncan, Jr. She is survived by daughters Dorothy Lynn Losey (Bob) of Louisville, KY; Laura Lynn Seitz (Jim) of Kingwood, TX: Aleta Everett Cannon (Dan) of Orlando, FL; Sheryl Everett Hargis (Mike) of Orlando, FL; Jana Everett Langston (Bruce) of Orlando, FL; grandchildren Kiera, Kenya, Jennifer, Erin, Martha, Ryan, William, and Matthew; and nieces, nephews, and great-grandchildren. The family will remember summer vacations at her home on Tom’s Bayou (“Nanny’s swimming pool”), her Southern accent, love of bawdy jokes, Christmas cookies, and constant love and support.
