Rev. RC Wesley Helms was born on November 23, 1930, and his work on earth was completed January 12, 2023. He received a call, an offer for an appointment and heavenly assignment, one that he could not refuse. He will not be returning; however, he has left us by example the instructions to know the way to meet him when we receive that same call.
RC was born in Tigertown, Texas to Joseph Jefferson Helms and Bithey Pleasure Kirby Helms. He was raised in a Christian home and his father was an evangelist ordained with the Assembly of God organization. He followed this example and accepted the call to preach the Gospel. He held his license with the Pentecostal Church of God for approximately 63 years.
RC was preceded in death by his father, Joseph Jefferson, his mother, Bithey Pleasure, his loving wife, Joy L. Helms “Sweet Momma”, his sons, Joe Wesley and Danny Ray and daughter, Doris Lorraine.
He was a faithful, loving, and caring husband to his current wife, Geneva McBee Helms. She and her family brought much joy to him and certainly God brought her into his life. He cared for her throughout her sickness until he was no longer able to physically do so. He loved her and her family dearly.
His memory will be cherished by his sons: Phil Helms, Thomas Helms and wife Carol, and Alvin Helms and wife Melodee; Daughter: Lenora Hunt and husband David “Andy” Hunt; Daughter in Law: JoAnn Helms; Son-in-Law: David Gilliam; numerous Grandchildren, Great-Grandchildren, and Great Great-Grandchildren; along with countless other extended family, friends and spiritual sons and daughters.
RC worked for the American Can Company starting in the late 1950’s and later retired there. During this time, he was a member of the United Steel Workers Union and served as a Union Steward. While on his secular job, he still was sharing the “Light” to “Darkness”. Later, some of these men and their families became members of his church and lifetime friends.
RC served as pastor at Calvary Pentecostal Church of God in the late 50’s and later went on to begin a new work at Tidwell Road Pentecostal Church of God in 1967. He remained at this location for 18 years. In 1983, at the request of Rev. Addie Soley, the Pastor of the Huffman church at that time, Tidwell Road Pentecostal Church of God relocated and merged with her congregation and Rev. Helms became the pastor. This church became First Pentecostal Church of God Huffman, TX. A new sanctuary was built, and the church thrived, reaching many in the community.
In 1988, Rev. RC Helms was elected District Superintendent/Bishop of the East Texas District Pentecostal Church of God. He served in this position for 21 years prior to retiring. In keeping with his lifelong commitment to build and equip others for Kingdom Work, he became the pastor of “the pastors” and “the preachers,” loving and serving in district leadership as he had pastored his local congregations in the past. He truly had a “Pastor’s Heart”.
